MetaCarta Unveils Significant Improvements to its Geographic Text Search (GTS) Technology

Cambridge, MA - August 10, 2004 - MetaCarta®, Inc., a leading provider of geographic intelligence, today unveiled the latest version of its Geographic Text Search (GTS) technology. Version 2.4 of MetaCarta GTS brings significant improvements to geotagging performance with a major revision of the internal MetaCarta Gazetteer, allowing users to detect more locations in more documents faster – literally within seconds.

Version 2.4 has significant improvements over previous versions of MetaCarta GTS. The Gazetteer against which all place names in a document are compared now has a much wider breadth of coverage resulting in a substantial increase in geographic tagging performance. Broader place name coverage has also resulted in improved confidence metrics for all locations in a document that MetaCarta GTS tags, including better tagging of large populations areas. MetaCarta GTS now handles place names with punctuation much more confidently and has improved support for non-ASCII characters. Users also benefit from faster service since the system now handles up to 20 queries per second.

MetaCarta serves customers in the government space, particularly agencies in intelligence, defense, and homeland security; and customers in the oil and gas exploration market - both sectors that need to search through significant amounts of information very efficiently, where geography is important.

“We made these improvements by carefully listening to our customers so that we could further meet their needs,” said Randy Ridley, Vice President and General Manager of Federal Systems with MetaCarta. “We focused on improving our technology in the areas that are most crucial in helping our customers achieve their mission, to ensure MetaCarta GTS is their technology of choice in this mission-critical area. Our goal is to be the standard technology for any organization that must search through mountains of disparate information efficiently, where geography plays a key role; version 2.4 helps us get there today.”
