Summary

The MetaCarta NewsMap service is a hosted map mashup / extension that lets publishers dynamically display maps that show the places mentioned in their news stories.

How Does it Work?

The MetaCarta NewsMap Application processes the text within news stories using our proprietary technology to extract the geographic places mentioned in them, and resolves them to their respective latitude and longitude coordinates. The places are then represented through the Application as an overlay of icons on virtually any digital map such as those from Google® and Microsoft®.

NewsMap can be used to display all of a day's news or stories from one or more categories of stories. Users can access more information about each story by simply placing their cursor over one of the map markers, which causes a text balloon to appear. This text balloon contains more information about the story and a link to its full text. Since the underlying map is fully interactive, users can easily pan or zoom the map to find areas of interest and associated stories.

Could I Add a NewsMap to My Site?

Absolutely.  MetaCarta created a simple HTML-based NewsMap that can drop in to any Web page with minimal effort.  Since it is a hosted Application, MetaCarta remotely indexes news stories directly from your feed from our facility in Massachusetts - in other words, we don't need to take up any space in your server farms.  MetaCarta handles all of the technology related to the map, the news index, the display, and anything else related to the NewsMap.
